Illness and Disability
The impact of an unforeseen illness or disability can be devastating--both emotionally and financially. You need health, disability and long term care insurance, but you'll need other ways to deal with costs.
What you can do:
Thoroughly understand your insurance policies.
Ask your doctor to lower his or her prices--if you consider them out of line or think your steady patronage entitles you to a discount. Some physicians will negotiate.
Use generic drugs instead of brand names, whenever possible. Buy medical items and pharmaceuticals from a chain drugstore or mail-order firm.
Use an immediate care center rather than an emergency room--if warranted.
Review hospital and doctor bills carefully for errors.
Explore local support and hospice services, often you can find disease- or disorder-specific help.
